Dissociative Identity Disorder

Dissociation is the way we naturally disconnect from distress.

It’s normal to avoid distressing or dangerous things. When we get burned by accidentally touching a hot stove, we remember it and actively avoid making the same mistake twice. When we are impacted by distress, especially repeatedly in early development like with CPTSD, our brain and body learn to internally distance from that distress. Sometimes this will increase our ability to dissociate and can cause disruption in our functioning. It can show up in brain fog, forgetting chunks of time in the day or feeling internal dissonance.

At Resilient Waters Counseling, we can use Anchored Relational techniques together to learn new ways to understand and even befriend our dissociative abilities. Rooted in development, neurology and competency based care, this specialized therapy can bring the tools needed to connect better with yourself and the world around you in a safe and healthy way.
